I laughed and threw my arms around him so hard he almost dropped the paperwork he was holding.

Later that night, Lyra and Selene came over. We sat in the backyard with takeout pizza balanced on paper plates and watched the city turn gold at the edges. Somebody somewhere down the street was grilling. A dog barked two houses over. The air had that sweet late-summer heaviness Atlanta wears better than most places.

Lyra took a sip of soda and said, “Lucian took the Chicago job.”

Selene laughed softly.

“So Vesper gets a choice. Follow him and live on a normal doctor’s salary, or stay here alone with her ego.”

Allaric squeezed my hand under the table.

The skyline glowed in the distance, soft and expensive-looking from far away, though we all knew cities are just places where people build performances and try to live inside them long enough to believe them.

We didn’t need a beach house on Tybee Island.

We didn’t need a shiny SUV.

We didn’t need to impress hospital wives who would vanish the second the image slipped.

We had honest work. Real friends. Love that did not need witnesses to count.

My studio was busier than ever. New clients came through Allaric’s network, through Lyra’s loyalty, through Dorian’s referrals, through simple word of mouth built not on image but trust. Selene started assisting me on larger weddings and turned out to be gifted—steady, sensitive, good with people, and hungry in the best possible way. We became friends, then partners of a sort, and watching her grow into the work felt like repairing a damage Vesper had meant to leave permanent.

That whole season changed something in me.

At first I thought the story was about winning.

About Vesper trying to sabotage me and life humiliating her in return.

But that isn’t really what stayed.

What stayed was the contrast.

Vesper had spent her whole life building herself around being seen correctly by the wrong people. She mistook admiration for love, expense for security, appearance for worth. So yes, at the family barbecue my sister mocked my husband’s job.

And weeks later, she had to stand in that same workshop, stripped of performance, asking for help from the very hands she had dismissed.
